Well I went a bit off line at about 400mph and ended up getting a massive swap-on and having a moment which lasted about 50 metres.

Eventually managed to bring tht bike to a stop, well outside the tapes - scary stuff!

Not at all. It just gets more progressive when the 2nd (harder) shock is being used. They're designed so just as the 1st shock bottoms out, the 2nd one has already started working.
